Hey, welcome back to RESONATE Podcast. I'm Austin here with Zoey, and wow, do we have something powerful to dive into today. You know that feeling when you're trying to grow professionally, but it feels like you're swimming upstream? Well, our founder, Jim, just published an incredible piece about finding your monsters. And I mean that in the best possible way. Zoey, when I first read this title, I was like, monsters? What are we talking about here? Right? I love how Jim flipped that concept on its head, Austin. You know, the whole idea that monsters aren't these scary things we should avoid, but actually the game changers we should be actively seeking out. What this week's article shows us is that these monsters are the high achievers, the bar raisers, the people who've conquered the challenges we're facing right now. Exactly. And Jim shared this amazing quote that really stuck with me. Because when you play with monsters, the things under your bed suddenly don't look so scary anymore. I mean, that's such a powerful way to think about it, right? When you're surrounded by people who are operating at a higher level, your own challenges start to feel more manageable. That's so true. And what's fascinating is how Jim breaks down why these monsters matter in the first place. You know, we've discovered through our work with mission-driven organizations that the people you surround yourself with can literally be the catalyst for exponential growth or, as Jim puts it, the barnacles slowing your progress. Oh, I love that barnacles reference. That connects perfectly to something we see all the time with our clients. You have these incredible leaders and nonprofits who are drowning in execution, right? And sometimes it's because they're not surrounded by the right people who can challenge them to think bigger, to step back into that strategic leadership role. Exactly. And Jim identifies four key qualities to look for when you're identifying your monsters. They've walked your path, they're invested in your success, they challenge you, and they maintain high standards. Austin, that fourth one really resonates with me because, you know, we consistently see leaders who settle for good enough when they could be achieving something extraordinary. Yes. And speaking of not settling, I'm fascinated by Jim's practical approach to building what he calls your monster squad. I couldn't help but smile at that monster squad movie reference, by the way. But seriously, he gives us this roadmap. Attend industry events, leverage online platforms, join mastermind groups and seek out mentorship opportunities. What I love about that framework is how actionable it is. You know, it's not just about collecting business cards at networking events. As Jim points out in the article, it's about forging meaningful connections and making sure you're putting yourself in the right rooms. And that table mastermind group he mentions, that's such a perfect example of being intentional about your growth circle. That reminds me of something we've learned working with advancement professionals. They're often so focused on serving others that they forget to invest in their own development. But when they do create that personal board of advisors, like Jim suggests, the transformation is incredible. Absolutely. And here's what's interesting about nurturing these relationships. Jim emphasizes that it has to be a two way street. You can't just take, take, take. You need to be proactive, offer value, stay accountable and express gratitude. I mean, that's relationship building 101. But it's amazing how often we forget to actually do it. Oh, that accountability piece is huge. Jim mentions preferring to check in twice daily. Morning and night. That level of commitment to growth and transparency, that's what separates the monsters from everyone else, you know? Exactly. And what really gets me excited about this approach is how it directly connects to the work we do at Captivation Agency. When our clients are surrounded by the right people, when they have that strategic breathing room, they can focus on what really matters, advancing their mission and creating meaningful impact. That's such a good point, Zoe. It's like Jim says in the article, when you surround yourself with giants, you're challenged to grow taller. And for mission driven leaders, growing taller means reaching more youth, creating more impact and building more sustainable support systems. So here's what I want our listeners to think about. Jim challenges us with some next steps and their gold. First, identify one monster this week, just one person who inspires you professionally and reach out to them. Don't overthink it. Just make the connection. And then schedule what he calls a power hour. Set up that focused hour long session with a mentor or peer to discuss your biggest challenge. You know, sometimes we think we need hours and hours of someone's time, but an intentional hour can be transformative. And then audit your current network. This one might sting a little, but it's so necessary. Who's pushing you forward? Who might be holding you back? It's not about cutting people out of your life, but being intentional about who you're spending your professional energy with. And finally, create that personal board of advisors. Jim references another great piece about the five key people you need in your life. The idea is to list those individuals who can form your growth circle, your monster squad, if you will. You know what I keep coming back to? This idea that when you curate a circle of monsters, you're not just preparing for success, you're actively creating it. That's so empowering for the leaders we work with, who often feel like success is something that happens to them rather than something they're architecting. Exactly. And that's the beautiful thing about this approach. It's proactive, it's intentional, and it's completely within your control. You get to choose who you surround yourself with. So here's our question for you this week. Who's your monster? Who's that one person you could reach out to who's already conquered the challenge you're facing right now? Don't wait for the perfect moment or the perfect introduction. Sometimes the best monsters are just an email or LinkedIn message away. Thanks for joining us on Resonate Podcast.
