Transforming Supporters Into Champions

The $3 Popsicle Strategy

Updated: April 14, 2026

Summarize this content:

The $3 Popsicle Strategy

Last week, I was on a call with a Development Director at a regional youth organization. She was brainstorming ways to create more memorable experiences for their supporters, but kept hitting the same wall.

“Jim, I know we need to do something different to stand out, but everything I can think of falls well outside of our budget…”

That’s when I was reminded of a story author Dan Heath shared at a national Boys & Girls Clubs of America conference I attended a number of years ago—a story that completely changed how I think about supporter engagement.

The Power of the Unexpected Moment

Dan told us about The Magic Castle Hotel in LA. The hotel itself, aside from its somewhat whimsical name, wasn’t all that out of the ordinary.

But poolside, they had something that surprised and delighted both first-time and returning patrons.

There’s a red phone by the pool labeled “Popsicle Hotline.” Pick it up, and a cheerful voice answers, “Popsicle Hotline!” You place your order, and within minutes, white-gloved staff deliver your popsicles on a silver tray.

Simple? Yes. Cheap? Absolutely—we’re talking maybe $3 in popsicles and staff time.

Memorable? This hotel became the #1 ranked hotel in all of Los Angeles, beating out the Ritz Carlton.

Why Your Supporters Crave These Moments

Sitting in that conference room full of Boys & Girls Club professionals, I watched everyone lean forward as Dan shared this story.

We all recognized something familiar—and it’s the same thing the person I was on the call with was missing: people don’t remember your event because you spent the most money.

They remember how you made them feel in unexpected moments.

Your supporters are drowning in identical fundraising events, generic thank-you emails, and predictable volunteer experiences.

They’re craving something that makes them stop and think, “I’ve never experienced anything like this before.”

The Strategic Framework: Creating Popsicle Moments

After working with youth-serving nonprofits for over 20 years—and carrying Dan Heath’s lesson with me ever since that conference—I’ve discovered that organizations creating the deepest supporter loyalty follow what I casually call the “Popsicle Strategy”—five simple principles that transform routine interactions into memorable experiences:

1. Identify the Everyday Touchpoint Every nonprofit has routine moments where supporters expect nothing special. The check-in table. The thank-you call. The volunteer orientation.

These are your greatest opportunities.

At one organization we work with, they transformed their standard facility tour. Instead of the typical walk-through, they created mission moments—stopping at specific locations where they share one powerful story about a child whose life was changed in that exact spot.

Same tour, same time investment, completely different impact.

2. Add the Unexpected Element The magic isn’t in the complexity—it’s in the surprise. What could you add to an existing touchpoint that costs almost nothing but creates a “wait, what just happened?” moment?

Another organization we partnered with started including a handwritten note from a youth in every corporate sponsor thank-you package. Not from staff—from an actual youth sharing what that sponsorship means to them.

The corporate partners started framing these notes and displaying them in their offices.

3. Make It Effortlessly Shareable The popsicle hotline works because guests immediately want to tell someone about it. Your memorable moments should practically beg to be shared.

One organization created “Impact Postcards”—beautiful cards featuring photos and quotes from the youth they serve. Volunteers can grab them at events and send them to friends and family.

Each postcard includes a QR code linking to a personalized thank-you video from the child featured. Volunteers become storytellers, not just helpers.

4. Connect to Your Deeper Mission This isn’t about gimmicks. Every memorable moment should reinforce why your organization matters.

The popsicle hotline works because it demonstrates The Magic Castle’s commitment to creating magical experiences.

When supporters experience your “popsicle moment,” they should walk away thinking, “This is exactly why I support this organization. They care about details that matter.”

5. Scale What Works Start small, measure impact, then expand. The Magic Castle didn’t launch with 50 unique amenities. They perfected the popsicle hotline, then added other memorable touches.

Track which moments generate the most organic sharing, repeat donations, or volunteer referrals.

Double down on what creates genuine connection.

Your Implementation Starting Point

You don’t need a marketing budget overhaul or months of planning. You need to identify one routine touchpoint this week and ask: “How could we add an unexpected element that costs almost nothing but creates a shareable moment?”

Maybe it’s the volunteer check-in process. Maybe it’s how you deliver donor reports. Maybe it’s the way you welcome first-time visitors.

Pick one. Add one small, unexpected element that reinforces your mission. Test it. Measure the response.

The Breathing Room This Creates

Here’s what happens when you implement the Popsicle Strategy: your supporters start marketing for you. They share stories, bring friends, and become advocates without being asked.

Instead of constantly chasing new supporters, you’re nurturing the ones you have into champions.

Instead of competing on event size or program scale, you’re winning on connection and memorability.

This creates the breathing room you’ve been craving—space to think strategically about mission advancement instead of constantly executing the same tactics.

Your Next Strategic Step

The question isn’t whether you have the budget to create memorable moments. The question is whether you can afford not to.

Your supporters are choosing between dozens of worthy causes. The ones they remember—and support long-term—are the ones that create unexpected moments of connection.

What’s your popsicle hotline going to be?
