For over 20 years, Captivation has worked with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties - the local recipient of the grant award.

About the Maytag Dependable Leader Award

In 2019, Jim joins a distinguished group of over 100 professionals and volunteers honored over the past two decades with the Maytag Dependable Leader Award.

The award is presented through a partnership between Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Maytag.

Together, these organizations celebrate dependability as a core virtue of the Clubs’ work and Maytag's appliances.

Each year, Boys & Girls Club employees and volunteers are nominated for the award by their peers. Maytag then reviews the nominations and selects seven recipients to receive the Maytag Dependable Leader Award and a $20,000 grant for their local Club.

Since 2010, the award has recognized over 100 incredible Boys & Girls Club staff members and volunteers across the country. Maytag has provided more than $8.4 million to empower youth development through their support of the award.

Jim was nominated by his colleagues who wanted to honor his lifelong passion for uplifting young people. We're grateful to Maytag and Boys & Girls Clubs for providing this platform to recognize Jim's unwavering commitment.

The 2019 Maytag Dependable Leaders

Jim is joining a remarkable cohort of professionals as a 2019 Maytag Dependable Leader. This year's class features leaders who have overcome adversity and tragedy to continue serving youth. Their stories are inspiring reminders of the power of dependability.

Here is more about each of this year's honorees:

• Corporal Jessica Ziegler, Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay: Corporal Ziegler works as a Community Liaison, bridging gaps between youth and law enforcement. She provides emotional support to Club members and enhances their success by collecting school supplies, shoes, and food.
• Jim Martin, Boys & Girls Clubs of Sarasota and DeSoto Counties: As mentioned above, Jim has dedicated over 20 years to the Boys & Girls Clubs.
• Rosemarie Joiner, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Northwest Indiana: Rosemarie has worked tirelessly for her Club for over 35 years. She continued her service despite personal tragedies, working to make her city safer.
• Gina McLain, Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui: Gina has helped generations of youth thrive through her work with the Clubs. She runs empowerment programs to support young people.
• Barry Woods, Boys & Girls Club of Stamford: Barry has dedicated over a decade to his Club. He runs educational programs that have dramatically improved graduation rates.
• Rodney “Coach DJ” Johnson, Boys & Girls Clubs of Ennis: Coach DJ has impacted thousands of lives through sports, mentoring, and motivational speaking. He shows up day after day to guide youth.
• Lester R. Johnson Jr., Eglin AFB School Age Care: Lester has inspired youth at Eglin Air Force Base through 22 years of service. He provides critical care and education to military families.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America

As background, Boys & Girls Clubs of America is a 150-year-old national organization that provides critical after-school care and mentoring to over 4.7 million youth across 4,600 Clubs.

Boys & Girls Clubs offer a safe, caring place for kids and teens to go after school, on weekends, and during summer. At Clubs, young people find mentors, educational programs, character development, healthy lifestyle promotion, and leadership opportunities.

The Clubs focus on empowering youth from disadvantaged backgrounds to discover their full potential. In a survey of Club alumni, 54% said the Clubs saved their lives by providing an alternative to the streets.

Boys & Girls Clubs of America also partners with over 400 military installations worldwide to support youth on U.S. bases. Their dedicated staff and volunteers across the country provide life-changing care to millions of young people.
