Be Brilliant at the Basics

Why Your Origin Story Comes Before Everything Else

Updated: April 19, 2026

Summarize this content:

Why Your Origin Story Comes Before Everything Else

I was having lunch with a friend years ago when he shared something that completely changed how I think about first impressions.

“Whenever I try a new pizza place,” he said, taking a bite of his perfectly simple margherita, “I always order the cheese pizza first.”

I looked at the menu sprawled between us—dozens of creative combinations with exotic toppings and gourmet ingredients. “Why not try something more interesting?”

He smiled. “Because if they can’t get the simplest pie right—the perfect crust, the right ratio of cheese to sauce, that ideal char on the edges—then there’s no hope for the fancy stuff. You have to be brilliant at the basics before you can master anything else.”

That conversation stuck with me, and over the years, I’ve realized it applies to far more than pizza…

The Origin Story Problem

In our work with mission-driven organizations, we see this pattern often: brands jumping straight to complex storytelling campaigns without first establishing their foundational narrative—their origin story.

They skip past the thing that makes them most unique and rush to tell stories they think their audience wants to hear.

But here’s what we’ve learned: without that foundational origin story, every other narrative feels like putting the cart before the horse.

You can’t have the sequel without the origin story.

Think about it from a moviegoer’s perspective. When filmmakers realize their main story lacks critical foundational elements for audiences to truly connect, what do they do? They create a prequel (the story, before the story). Why? Because the confusion in viewers’ minds needs clearing up before the larger story can truly resonate.

The stories we tell for our brands are no different…

Why Origins Matter More Than “Features”

Your origin story isn’t just “how you got started.”

It’s the emotional foundation that gives context to everything else you do.

It answers the deeper questions that audiences are really asking – like:

  • Why does this organization exist?
  • What drove someone to create this solution?
  • What problem were they passionate enough about to dedicate their life to solving?
  • What makes their approach different from everyone else’s?

Without these answers, audiences receive your marketing messages like watching a movie that started halfway through.

They might follow along, but they’re never fully invested because they don’t understand the stakes or why they should care.

The “Cheese Pizza Test” for Brands

Just like my friend’s pizza philosophy, let’s explore what I call the “cheese pizza test” for brand storytelling:

Can you tell your organization’s origin story in a way that immediately helps people understand why you exist and why it matters?

If the answer is no, then your more complex stories—your impact narratives, your program successes, your vision for the future—will never reach their full potential…

Here’s what a strong origin story foundation looks like:

Before: Generic Mission Statement

“We provide educational resources and support services to underserved communities, focusing on sustainable development and capacity building.”

After: Origin-Based Foundation

“In 2018, Maria watched her daughter struggle with homework every night because their apartment had no internet and the local library closed at 6 PM. As a single mother working two jobs, Maria couldn’t afford tutoring or high-speed internet. That’s when she realized: if her bright, capable daughter was falling behind simply because of circumstances, how many other children were facing the same invisible barriers? Maria started our organization in her living room, determined to ensure that no child’s potential would be limited by their zip code.”

See the difference?

The second version gives you someone to root for, a clear problem that needed solving, and an emotional reason to care—before you ever hear about programs, statistics, or outcomes.

The Foundation-First Approach

In video production, we learned long ago that you can’t fix fundamental story problems with fancy graphics or clever editing. The story structure has to be solid from the beginning.

The same principle applies to all brand storytelling:

1. Master Your Origin Story First Get crystal clear on why your organization exists and what unique perspective or experience led to its creation.

2. Use Your Origin as the Foundation Every other story you tell should connect back to this foundational “why” in some way.

3. Then Build Outward Once audiences understand your origin, they’re prepared to engage with your impact stories, program details, and future vision.

This Week’s Challenge: Find Your “Cheese Pizza” Story

Take a step back from all your current marketing materials and ask yourself:

  • What specific moment, experience, or realization led to your organization’s creation?
  • Who was involved in that founding moment, and what were they feeling?
  • What problem became so compelling that someone had to do something about it?
  • How does that original “why” still drive your work today?

If you can answer these questions with specific, emotional details, you have the foundation for every other story you’ll ever tell.

If you can’t, then you’ve just identified the most important storytelling work you need to do.

Building Stories That Last

At Captivation Agency, we’ve learned that the most powerful brand stories aren’t the ones with the most sophisticated production values or clever concepts. They’re the ones built on solid foundations—clear origins that help audiences understand not just what you do, but why you exist.

When you’re brilliant at that basic foundation, everything else becomes possible. Your impact stories hit harder because people understand the heart behind them. Your calls to action feel natural because audiences already know why your mission matters.

But it all starts with getting that “cheese pizza” perfect.

Ready to master your foundational story? Let’s work together to uncover and craft the origin narrative that will make every other story you tell more powerful.
